St Joseph’s Orbost celebrates 100 years

13 April 2023

People travelled from far and wide to celebrate St Joseph's Catholic Primary School, Orbost’s 100 year birthday with a School Open Day and get together on Saturday 25 March.

A Mass led by Catholic Bishop of Sale, Most Reverend, Greg Bennet was conducted on Sunday, 26 March followed by a community barbecue.

The weekend was a wonderful way of reconnecting with generations of people whose lives have been touched by the school.

Bishop Greg Bennett and Director of Catholic Education, Mr Paul Velten spoke at the official presentation with guests including the Hon. Darren Chester MP attending.

Past students, staff and some of the Sisters of St Joseph’s attended to share their memories of St Joseph’s.

98-year-old Ella White enjoyed the day. She attended the school as a child and went on to become a nurse in Gippsland and Melbourne.

Ella lives in Orbost and has many fond memories of her time at the school more than 90 years ago.

A large photo display was created in the school hallway as well as digital power points of old photos in each classroom and memorabilia in the hall.

Thank you to St Joseph’s Primary school staff, students, families, Parish and all those who contributed to developing this memorable weekend.
